Heat loss through windows isn’t uncommon in most modern homes. There are many reasons for this, including damage to the frames, ill-fitting seals, or conduction.

The average home experiences 10% of its heat loss through windows, most of which through energy loss via conduction and convection. During this process, double glazed windows pull heat from your home and transfer it to the cooler pain outside.

Fortunately, at Lambton ClimateCare, we know what it takes to maintain comfortable home temperatures and how to reduce heat loss from windows. Here are a few signs to look for to see if your windows are the reason for heat loss at home.

Cool Air Around the Window

Conduction may account for much of the heat loss due to windows, but it isn’t the only reason Lambton homes lose heat. If you feel cool air around your windows, it’s likely a leak. Drafty windows are problematic because they suck warm air out and replace it with cold air. This hikes up the cost of energy and home heating.

The Fix: To counteract leaky windows, find the place where the cool air is coming in. If it’s a small area, you may be able to seal it up yourself. Caulking is one way to do this. Worst case scenario, you may need to replace the window.

Windows Icy to the Touch

Double glazed windows should feel cool when you touch them, this means they’re working. If they feel too cold, however, it could be an issue with the outer glazing.

The Fix: A window film is a quick and cheap alternative to getting new windows installed. Although, this is a bandage, not a permanent fix. Window film goes over your window and sticks in place as an interior form of insulation. It helps reduce leaks and creates a reflective surface to force radiation back out toward the external panes of glass.

Home Heating Bill Seems Higher Than Usual

If you notice a spike in the home heating or energy bill, it could be due to a drop in temperature caused by drafty windows.

The Fix: Have a home heating assessment. In Ontario, this will run you somewhere around $400, but it’s well worth the investment. During the audit, your home will be investigated for any energy inefficiencies in your home, including faulty windows or doors.

How to Reduce Heat Loss Through Windows

There are many ways a Lambton home could be losing heat through the windows. To find the right solution check for things like:

  • Cold patches near the window
  • Moving curtains when the window is closed
  • Spikes in energy bills
  • Trouble closing and locking windows due to a poor seal
  • Damage around the window frame

From film covers and weather stripping to caulking and putting up curtains, there are plenty of fixes. To be proactive, consult your home heating company for insight on where your windows are losing heat and how to stop it.
